Some comments on the initial part of the Gentoo Linux 2005.1 x86 Handbook

A-1.a Introduction / Welcome!
How does this document differ from the main Gentoo Handbook?
Who is this aimed at - total newb, used other distro, 2nd+ go at Gentoo, ...?

A-1.a Introduction / What are my Options?
The 2nd paragraph, "This document covers...", should be the first paragraph. The second sentence can be simplified: "You can then use one of our Package CDs to install a complete system in a matter of minutes."
The 1st paragraph, "You can install Gentoo...", should be the second cos its not the main point of this document, and should be formatted as a bullet list of the other options plus links to where they are described.
The 3rd paragraph is unnecessary information at this point and should be removed. [The language is contorted, and the link to the main handbook is not specific enough]
The 4th paragraph is not needed if the "Welcome" above described what the point of this document is. The bug reporting also ought to be somewhere as a standalone paragraph (the same in all Gentoo docs) - and it ought to link to a page that tells you how to report a documentation bug in slightly more friendly fashion than dropping you straight into Bugzilla.

A-1.b Fast Installation using the Gentoo Reference Platform
This is too complicated, specially for someone who's new to the game. All thats really being said is that
- Gentoo is a source based distribution so
- it can take time to compile all the packages you want so
- we've supplied a set of pre-built packages (the GRP) for you so
- you can get going quickly and then
- you can go online and get the latest versions (if you want to)
- but we only provide this for the following architectures:...

The 2005.1 handbooks are deprecated in favor of the current release, 2006.0. Also, the structure of the x86 handbook opening has been altered slightly. Package CDs are also no longer available; we have the GLI. And, well, Gentoo *is* a technical distribution; technical language is unavoidable.

As soon as the Bugzilla guide rewrite is complete (there's an open bug about that), we will probably link to it from several documents.

Thanks for taking the time to leave us feedback.
