With the release of Thunderbird/Firefox 1.5 there is no default branding anymore. Instead Firefox is called Deer Park and Thunderbird just Mail/News Client. As you are not allowed to use the offical branding anymore without explicit permission from the mozilla.org foundation (--enable-official-branding) Gentoo would have to provide its own branding. E.g. Debian chose to name Firefox "Debian Firefox" and they provided their own icon etc. for it.
Imho Gentoo should provide its own branding and not ship Firefox/Thunderbird unbranded, you could choose something like "Gentoo Firefox" and "Gentoo Thunderbird".
