After emerging bash-3.1-r2 /etc/init.d/net.lo of baselayout-1.12.0_pre12 fails with following error:

"no loaded modules provide brd_start"

... and therefor no loopback device is available.

Reverting back to bash-3.0-r14 fixes the problem.

You need to update to pre13 for baselayout :/
