in the default /etc/make.conf included in stage1-ppc-1.4_rc1.tbz2 (and possibly
others):

CFLAGS="-03 -pipe -fsigned-char"

that really should be -O3 (ie, 'oh three' not 'zero three').

Yes, htis was fixed a long while ago, where did you find this still?

this was in stage1-ppc-1.4_rc1.tbz2 which i downloaded from ibiblio early
morning fri dec 6 eastern time. md5sum checked out fine:
5c11922a2bfdd8c4128d062ff4f39fca  stage1-ppc-1.4_rc1.tbz2

Yes you are right :(

These stages should be replaced by newere stages almost any day now, just doing
testing on the latest ones.. once they are up I will pull these older stages down.

This should be fixed in next portage release (was still an error in the
make.conf.ppc file for portage which I've fixed now)

This is fixed now and should be reflected in all make.conf since portage 2.0.46
