do you have enough disk space in /var/tmp ?

Do you have "hardenedphp" enabled in dev-lang/php ? If yes, this is the cause of the problem, simply reemerge without "hardenedphp" enabled and then emerge PEAR-PEAR again, it should work. This will be fixed with the next revision of dev-lang/php that should get into Portage in a few days, so that "hardenedphp" works again correctly, I'll update this bug once the new, fixed dev-lang/php packages are in the tree.
