Hmmm? So unmask it, if you are using modular X. If not, it depends on virtual/x11 which is stable. Jakub, I'd think anything that requires manual intervention for the portage tree to behave correctly is a bug - with a workaround or not, plus, I think that gd build is stable, and thus should not depend on unstable (masked) dependancies.
