During installation according to the Handbook command:
mirrorselect -i -r -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf
should add SYNC="..." to /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf but instead it adds it to /etc/make.conf
Observed with 2005.1-r1

Can the releng people or the bug reporter specify what version of mirrorselect is in question here?

It was version 0.89

This problem should not exist in current versions.
