there is a nasty bug in libao that causes apps to crash when libao tries to use arts a lot of users of gaim hit this in all distros, I filed a bug with libao here:
http://trac.xiph.org/cgi-bin/trac.cgi/ticket/644
to no avail.

gaim devs tell me that RH has patched arts to work.  RH bug is here:

This patch has been pushed out with FC4.  It would be a "Good Thing" if we could get this in as well.
