Description Paul Taylor 2005-12-21 03:03:46 UTC
I've been getting the following error for the last day or two:

   # emerge sync
   >>> starting rsync with rsync://203.87.95.205/gentoo-portage...
   >>> checking server timestamp ...
   This is rsync3.au.gentoo.org.

   rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [receiver]
   rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(434)
   >>> retry ...

The other Australian mirror in the rsync.au.gentoo.org pool (ftp.cc.swin.edu.au) is working fine.

Also, while the 203.87.95.205 server claims to be "rsync3.au.gentoo.org", DNS has that pointing to ftp.cc.swin.edu.au (136.186.1.76). I tried a few other numbers, but none seem to point to 203.87.95.205.

Seeing the same problem here except I get a few bytes before it dies:

ptolemy ~ # emerge --sync
>>> starting rsync with rsync://203.87.95.205/gentoo-portage...
>>> checking server timestamp ...
This is rsync3.au.gentoo.org.

rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (43 bytes read so far)
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(189)
>>> retry ...

>>> Starting retry 1 of 3 with rsync://136.186.1.76/gentoo-portage
>>> checking server timestamp ...
-------------------------------------------------------------
               F T P . S W I N . E D U . A U
...8<.snip...

The rsync pool looks like:

ptolemy ~ # host rsync.au.gentoo.org
rsync.au.gentoo.org has address 136.186.1.76
rsync.au.gentoo.org has address 203.87.95.205
ptolemy ~ # host rsync1.au.gentoo.org
Host rsync1.au.gentoo.org not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
ptolemy ~ # host rsync2.au.gentoo.org
Host rsync2.au.gentoo.org not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
ptolemy ~ # host rsync3.au.gentoo.org
rsync3.au.gentoo.org has address 136.186.1.76
ptolemy ~ # host rsync4.au.gentoo.org
Host rsync4.au.gentoo.org not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
ptolemy ~ # host rsync5.au.gentoo.org
Host rsync5.au.gentoo.org not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

Usually connectivity problems arise for me because I'm on an IP range (59/8) that is commonly the subject of misconfigured firewalls: it was once reserved by IANA (58/7). This is not the case here AFAICT because I can access the http://isaiah.userfriendly.com.au/ site by name or IP without issue.

Any reply from that admin? It's been a solid month.

If not, remove him from the ACL and all DNS entries.

No response, long since removed. Closing bug.
