the build of dev-lang/perl-5.8.7-r1 fails with the following error:

cc1: error: unrecognized option `-fno-stack-protector'
make: *** [regcomp.o] Error 1

Post the output of 'emerge -pv gcc' and reopen then.

Well, I don't know really what's wrong here. This only happens when you've
compiled your gcc with USE=vanilla (Bug 101471). Can you upgrade your gcc to
latest stable version (3.3.6 on hppa) and try again?
