Original path to ftp server is (in gmt-4.0.edbuild)
ftp://gmt.soest.hawaii.edu/pub/gmt/...  -> error 530, login incorrect

This has to be changed to ftp.soest.hawaii.edu/pub/gmt/

emerge -a gmt

Thanks for reporting! I believe the correct ftp address should be 
ftp://ftp.soest.hawaii.edu/gmt/4 and SRC_URI has been fixed in CVS.
