hi:

I just downloaded the latest R 2.2.0.  It compiles cleanly, and should become
the new R distribution.  However, it does contain an internal pdf encoding
related bug.  It is fixed in the latest patch version, available e.g. at
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/languages/R/CRAN/ , which is why we should work with
the patched version.

for some odd reason, when I build R standalone, it does not install some files
in the library, specifically /usr/local/lib/R/afm/ISOLatin1.enc (and other files
in the lib dir, related to R).  so, I just build the gentoo version first, then
installed 2.2.0, then installed patched.  not particularly pretty, but it works.

in any case, I just wanted to highly recommend that we provide this updated
version, instead of 2.1.1.  for someone who knows what they are doing, this
should be a no-brainer.  for someone like me who is clueless on the other hand...
