I upgraded to grub-0.97-r1 and attempted to do root(hd0,0) and setup(hd0) and
setup fails with this:

Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+18 p (hd0,0)/boot/grub/stage
/boot/grub/menu.lst"... failed

I downgraded back to grub-0.97 and setup succeeds correct with this:

Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+18 p (hd0,0)/boot/grub/stage2
/boot/grub/menu.lst"... succeeded

Reproducible: Always
