Steve Kemp (maintainer of GNUMP3d) issued a bad release, 2.9.6, which was updated into portage the 
day it was released. 2.9.7, also released on the same day, has not been included into portage yet 
(released 10/28/05)

 The release of v2.9.6 was utterly broken.  To fix this please
 take v2.9.7.

  This should be available shortly from the gnump3d.org website.
 (Just waiting for the webpages to refresh themselves).

1. Install GNUMP3d 2.9.6, old known bad version

Actual Results:  
Just need to update to 2.9.7 ASAP

Expected Results:  
It crashes. We need to update.
