When scanimage is started the message:
"Failed to open device `sm3600:3/1`: Error during device I/O." 
is displayed and starting of scanner failed.
Xsane and kooka also coundn't start scanner.
This bug was reported as a kernal bug:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109355 and
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5525
but it is not a kernel bug, this is an media-gfx/sane-backend problem.
The problem is present in stable media-gfx/sane-backends-1.0.15 and also in
unstable media-gfx/sane-backends-1.0.16-r3
The CVS version of scane-backends from http://www-sane-project.org is this bug
free (scanner works fine)
