Description Mathieu Jobin 2005-10-31 00:10:22 UTC
just had an idea, because I like gentoo very much, but I'm getting tired of
compil time and I think it be sweet if gentoo could work more with binary
packages. so I was thinking when somebody emerge something from source, ...
there is an option that allow already to create a package from it and store it
in /usr/portage/packages. right ?

What is this option would go further and would upload the package for anyone
to download it. in a structure such as ....

binary/arch/proc/package/version/

so that when you emerge a software it would check for a binary package first,
if not found, it would compil it and upload it for the next persons ;)

doesn't that sounds good ?

Major problems with that, like resources (requires tons of storage and bandwidth),
USE flags, and most importantly - security.

These are major questions, but I don't see them as unsolvable problems.
- The status of all flags can be stored together with a binary.
- Tons of storage and bandwith can be managed with the bittorrent scheme, or
with bittorrent itself.
- Security seems more complcated to me. PGP web of trust could be used straight
away. Efficiency could be boosted by storing checksums centrally.
