setting up a new gentoo installation, emerge system stops with

checking for C++ compiler default output file name... configure: error: C++  
compiler cannot create executables

2. bootstrap 
3. emerge system 
(4. # emerge --resume)

Must correct my bug report, I did not do '# emerge system' but '# emerge   
--emptytree system' of course.   
 
Solution form Bug 99533 does not work for me, '# emerge --nodeps gpm' does fail  
(some emacs-error-message), either does '# emerge --nodeps aspell'.   
   
But '# USE="-gpm" emerge aspell' works fine, seems to me a nice  
workaround.
