Bug 108665 – glibc-2.3.5-r2 fails to emerge: unrecognized option `-fno-stack-protector'

When I run emerge world it tries to update glibc:

[ebuild     U ] sys-libs/glibc-2.3.5-r2 [2.3.5-r1]

Which fails with the following error:
