Bug 108229 – gtypist; tipptrainer; problems with utf-8

my systems encoding setting is utf-8 (afaik). when approaching to improve my 
typing i wanted to use gtypist or tipptrainer. gtypist doesn't properly 
recognise my inputs at umlauts. tipptrainer doesn't regognise any input. i think 
it has to do with my utf-8 settings. i tried manipulating the $LANG but this 
didn't help. using an non-utf8 terminal also didn't help.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. set up a gentoo with utf-8 (use="unicode"?)
2. start gtypist
3. start tipptrainer

Actual Results:  
the programs didn't work

Expected Results:  
recogiesed my input (tipptrainer something, gtypist umlauts)

Same problem with tipptrainer here.

The program reports:

(tipptrainer:21210): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_text_buffer_emit_insert: assertion
`g_utf8_validate (text, len, NULL)' failed

wxGTK has been emerge with these settings:

I think problem in broken environment.
can you set LANG to "de_DE.UTF-8" and unset LC_ALL

Thanks for the answer. Actually forgot to add myself to the cc list last time. 

I probably re-emerged a number of packages in between and when I start tipptrainer now, it reports no problems anymore. 
But it does not receive any input as described in the first report.
