Bug 107653 – openoffice.org has incorrect spacing (width versus glyph extents?) for many symbol characters

I don't know if this is a bug in the font or the word processor, but it is   
nevertheless a bug found in some Gentoo packages.   
   
Using the Symbol font from within OpenOffice.org causes the symbols to appear   
jammed together with the character to the right.  I have observed this   
specifically with lamda and set-union.  OpenSymbol also has some similar   
problems.  This problem appears the same in print as it does on the screen,   
which suggests to me that it may be a font bug.   
 
Usually, this isn't a problem, but there are certain characters that, when 
following a lamda, disappear, like period. 
 

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Type LLL 
2. Select the middle L 
3. Change its font to Symbol 
 
 
Actual Results:  
The lamda and L on the right overlap 

Expected Results:  
There should be inter-character spacing between the lamda and the L on the 
right.

Which version of OOo are you using, also under which desktop environment?

Closing this until we get more info. Also this really is a problem you should
report upstream, as most likely this is no Distro-specific

I was using OOo 1.1.4 under KDE 3.4.1.  Do you have a convenient way to forward
this upstream?
