i am still using kernel 2.4 on my system (2.4.26-gentoo-r6 to be exact - the
system has over 400 days uptime!)
and after upgrading samba to 3.0.20 i cant mount remote shares.
i get following error from kernel:
smbfs: mount_data version 1919251317 is not supported

shouldnt it be somehow build conditionaly for those folks out there who stick to
kernel 2.4 tree?

I think this is due to the lack of smbmount. Just re-'emerge sync' and install
samba-3.0.20-r1

you were right. everything (excluding original samba bugs) works smoothly now.
