As it is now I need to add --enable-zr to the ebuild. It would be nice with a
use flag or some other way to do this automatically so it is not forgotten on
upgrade.

Is this still an issue in the newer versions?  The support for that one should be autodetected by the configure script -- the ebuilds don't touch it one way or another.
