Once I replaced sendmail with exim, mail stopped working properly. I get the   
following when I try entering  mail -s "hi" johndoe@example.com 
 
sh: line 1: sendmail:/usr/sbin/sendmail: No such file or directory 
 
/usr/sbin/sendmail does exist. It is a symbolic link to the exim binary.

Which package is providing your mail, which version of exim?

Works for me with exim-4.62/mailx-8.1.2.20040524-r1
