for some man pages, e.g. man mplayer, man flashes this text at the bottom of the
window and then displays the man page:

afaik it's an error in the manpage itself

ok, that's fine.  did you see the error on your system(s) also?   just want
confirmation it's not a local problem to my box.

yes, when i do `man mplayer`, i see the error you're referring to

if you feel up to it, the proper thing would be to file a bug for each package
whose manpage spits out errors like that
