Description Angel Docampo 2005-08-18 07:35:58 UTC
I tried to boot install-liveCD in a PIV with an Nvidia GeForce MMX440 card and
every time it simply hangs at the nvidia logo screen, the only thing i can do is
move the cursor... :(
if i try Ctrl-Alt F2 appears a nice black screen where i can do nothing at
all...when i turn back Ctrl-Alt F7 appears random squares dancing at my screen,
same if i try to kill X server by pressing Ctrl-Alt Backspace.

I searched for this here and in forums and all that people says is to do
something once the liveCD boots but seems that it boots for everyone... ah my
downloaded CD works, not in my computer but yes in one friend of mine PC. He has
the same PC specs than me but instead a nvidia card it has an ATI 9600 one.

PS: Sorry if i post nonsense stuff here, its not my intention. I cannot post any
log or console out because my system dont let me interact with it, then i try to
explain in my better english what happens to see if someone can help or suggest
anything as some boot option that i can ignore, i tried with -nofb or -agpgart
but the result is the same each time...
If i should post more hardware specs please tell me, but i believe that all
fails because graphic card... at least i guess it.

thank you in advance

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Boot the computer with install live CD
2.wait
3.cry :_(

Actual Results:
A nice NVidia Screen appears and then ... nothing ... at all.

Expected Results:
Boot a nice Desktop system. (Gnome)

I tested in two pc's mine (which doesn't work):
Pentium 4 1,7GHz
768 MB RAM, IDE HDD, IDE DVD
NVidia GeForce4 MMX440
Friend's Computer (which works nice):
Pentium 4 2,4GHz
768 MB RAM, IDE HDD, IDE CDROM
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

I have only Nvidia cards and it works fine for me.

Also, the "LiveCD" is not an InstallCD, but rather an experimental CD< so
there's not a whole lot that can be done.

You can try booting with "gentoo nox" and that will get you to the command line.
From there, you can check out what was configured by x-setup by looking in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf to see if there's anything out of the ordinary. There's also
the possibility that you just need to wait longer for it to start. You can also
try hitting "Control + Alt + Backspace" to get it to exit X, but that might not
work for you properly. If you can get to the command prompt (without using
"nox") then you can look in /var/log/X.org.log and see what is showing up there.

First of all, thanks for your quick answer.
I know that this is a Experimental CD, and a lot of things still must be done,
but i think this CD its known as install liveCD.
I started with nox option and saw /etc/X11/xorg.conf and i see no problems
there: Driver was 'nvidia' and screen resolutions and refresh rates were also
ok. I forget to say that the first time that i tested it, i'd wait for more
than one hour, and my friend's PC boots in a few minutes, logically i will not
wait each time during one hour to test (i wait more or less during 10 minutes,
i think im wasting a lot of time waiting 10 minutes each time i try...), then
nor xorg.conf neither waiting for a miracle works for me...
As i pointed before, killing X server by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace neither
works and finally, i cannot see at /var/log/X.org.log without boot with the nox
option...
well i guess i must wait to a official release to try again... anyway tonight
i'll try on my laptop (also has a nvidia card), i'll see then if it works
there, but i must say that i wasnt able to install with the traditional
method... only distro that install smoothly on my laptop is (open)SuSE while
i've installed several times gentoo on my PC.

I have several machines and every one has an Nvidia card. While I don't have
the same card as you, I have ones from your generation and even before and have
yet to find an issue with them working here. I'm really wondering if it could
be your card. As for the installation, I hate to break it to you, but using the
graphical installer is actually harder than a standard install because there's
no directions for it... ;] Not to mention it follows the Handbook as closely as
possible, so if you're having trouble with a Handbook install, you won't be able
to complete the graphical installtion either.

Waiting 10 minutes is fine. It shouldn't ever take longer than that, and really
shouldn't take more than a few seconds at most.

I'm going to guess that you don't have another video card to try, do you?

Also, try booting with "nox" and then running "gdm" manually from the command
prompt. You should be able to get to the X log file then. Other than these
things, I'm really not sure what else I can do, since I can't reproduce it, even
on my Geforce 4 440 Mobile, which is as close as I have to what you have.

I'll try all what you say... but i tried to boot in my laptop and in less than
2 minutes a gnome desktop appears and it seems to work!!!
Well, right now im trespassing all data from laptop to PC and then i'll see if
i can do something here in my laptop.

Anyway as i said, i'll try boot with nox and then run dgm at my oldie PC and
see the log you mentioned, because i want get install gentoo at my PC and if
its posible, also on my laptop.

I haven't heard anything back for a long time, so I'm marking this as NEEDINFO.
