Right now Portage just prints symbols when applying updates.  However, this doesn't tell anything about how far it is, and this can be problematic when dealing with some huge updates involving lots of binary packages.

I think it'd better to provide some "numeric" progress, like:

  binary packages ... [67 applied, scanned 1412 out of 3641]
