Which CD is this?
Comment 2 christian meunier 2002-10-22 22:02:10 UTC
1.4_rc1 also tried with an SMP kernel of an older gentoo version.

At this point, i am pretty sure it's not really tied with Gentoo, i tried RH
8.0 / 7.3 with the exact same result.

Have the same problem but then with a p4
Comment 4 Daniel Robbins (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-12-24 02:11:20 UTC
Hi, please try the "2002122300" livecd-basic from
http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/experimental/livecd/ and post results (good/bad) here.
Thanks very much for the bug report.
Comment 5 Geflopt 2002-12-27 07:50:51 UTC
i'll give it a shot, but that'll be in the new year.
Comment 6 Geflopt 2003-01-01 14:26:05 UTC
Have tried it, but no go, after the message booting the kernel. Have tried all
the boot options, but to no avail.

Here you have a list of the specs:
P4-2.53 GHZ northwood
Epox bea MOBO (845G chip set)
Asus G-force 4 ti 4600 video card
Philips 12-..-40 burner
lg dvd
512 kingston 2700 @ 2100 (due to mainboard)

hmmm....

I have the exact same problem. Boot up, pretty Gentoo logo, select any of the
options (I tried all of those listed):
"Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel."
And then the kernel doesn't seem to have much to say.

I tried the x86 CD of 1.4_rc2 and the 12/23 build you suggested, neither one
works.

I have an AMD K-6 333 processor (don't laugh), 4GB HD, 56MB RAM.

I previously installed Red Hat 6.1, Debian 2.1, Lycoris 1.0, and Vector Linux
3.0 with no problems (i.e., they all installed, booted, and ran).

Hi, i've tested for myself, but i think it's might be my pc, i don't know what
it is. I have tested it with: SuSE 8.0 and Knoppix and both hang right after
they are saying they are going to boot the kernel.
Comment 10 Geflopt 2003-01-22 04:41:44 UTC
First i thought it was the memory, but that is ok. Memtest86 (of
www.memtest86.com) tested for 10 hours straight and didn't find anything wrong.
I'll try a couple of more distro's, maybe one of them work.
Comment 11 Geflopt 2003-02-20 09:00:48 UTC
Think i've found the problem. If you look on google on epox, kernel and boot, you find a complete list of the problem. During one upgrade in kernel number, there went something wrong. What exactly is the question, i don't know but i've tried booting with kernel 2.4.3 (bootdisk of redhat) and everything went fine. I think it has to do with the detection of the memory. People refer to the mem=XM, but this doesn't seem to work anymore as of kernel 2.4.6

This one is interresting if you look at this problem:
http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/linux/linux-kernel/2002-33/0216.html
I think,it should be reported.

Hello. I have the same problem with the 1.4rc_2 livecd...but not the
1.4rc_1....

my specs are :

AcerPower brand machine (ebay, yay)
400mhz PII, 384mb PC100 sdram dimms
8gb maxtor hd
rage128 pro

1.4rc1 disk works fine...it's the new installer/ootloader that is giving me
trouble, i suppose.

there's really no harm in using the rc1 livecd just to get things
going....right?
Comment 14 Michael Cohen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-06-19 19:41:11 UTC
We need to make a web page on this or something so we can get a list of the potential configurations where our kernel does not work....

We should have this at least partially implemented in 1.4's livecds.
Comment 15 Michael Cohen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-06-19 19:51:50 UTC
Please try 1.4_rc4 as LiveWire and pfiefer reassured me that this bug is primarily due to the gcc 3.1 optimization patch I wrote. rc4 has this removed.
Comment 16 Martin Holzer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-09-09 13:43:46 UTC
is this fixed ?
Comment 17 Brian Jackson (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-09-27 11:45:02 UTC
I'd like to know if this is still an issue
Comment 18 Michael Cohen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-09-27 12:06:20 UTC
believe so, but nobody with a matching box has reported that it now works.
Comment 19 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-25 11:25:00 UTC
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux".

I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers,
this is the only reasonable way to do this.
