Hi all, i tried to install Gentoo on my new xeon server but the machine just freeze after uncompressing the kernel. Config: 1 * Xeon 2.2 Ghz Tyan S2720 motherboard / Intel E7500 server chipset --> http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderi7500.html 2*512 DDR registered
Which CD is this?
1.4_rc1 also tried with an SMP kernel of an older gentoo version. At this point, i am pretty sure it's not really tied with Gentoo, i tried RH 8.0 / 7.3 with the exact same result.
Have the same problem but then with a p4
Hi, please try the "2002122300" livecd-basic from http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/experimental/livecd/ and post results (good/bad) here. Thanks very much for the bug report.
i'll give it a shot, but that'll be in the new year.
Have tried it, but no go, after the message booting the kernel. Have tried all the boot options, but to no avail. Here you have a list of the specs: P4-2.53 GHZ northwood Epox bea MOBO (845G chip set) Asus G-force 4 ti 4600 video card Philips 12-..-40 burner lg dvd 512 kingston 2700 @ 2100 (due to mainboard)
hmmm....
I have the exact same problem. Boot up, pretty Gentoo logo, select any of the options (I tried all of those listed): "Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel." And then the kernel doesn't seem to have much to say. I tried the x86 CD of 1.4_rc2 and the 12/23 build you suggested, neither one works. I have an AMD K-6 333 processor (don't laugh), 4GB HD, 56MB RAM. I previously installed Red Hat 6.1, Debian 2.1, Lycoris 1.0, and Vector Linux 3.0 with no problems (i.e., they all installed, booted, and ran).
Hi, i've tested for myself, but i think it's might be my pc, i don't know what it is. I have tested it with: SuSE 8.0 and Knoppix and both hang right after they are saying they are going to boot the kernel.
First i thought it was the memory, but that is ok. Memtest86 (of www.memtest86.com) tested for 10 hours straight and didn't find anything wrong. I'll try a couple of more distro's, maybe one of them work.
Think i've found the problem. If you look on google on epox, kernel and boot, you find a complete list of the problem. During one upgrade in kernel number, there went something wrong. What exactly is the question, i don't know but i've tried booting with kernel 2.4.3 (bootdisk of redhat) and everything went fine. I think it has to do with the detection of the memory. People refer to the mem=XM, but this doesn't seem to work anymore as of kernel 2.4.6 http://www.google.nl/search?q=epox+kernel+boot&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=nl&lr=
This one is interresting if you look at this problem: http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/linux/linux-kernel/2002-33/0216.html I think,it should be reported.
Hello. I have the same problem with the 1.4rc_2 livecd...but not the 1.4rc_1.... my specs are : AcerPower brand machine (ebay, yay) 400mhz PII, 384mb PC100 sdram dimms 8gb maxtor hd rage128 pro 1.4rc1 disk works fine...it's the new installer/ootloader that is giving me trouble, i suppose. there's really no harm in using the rc1 livecd just to get things going....right?
We need to make a web page on this or something so we can get a list of the potential configurations where our kernel does not work.... We should have this at least partially implemented in 1.4's livecds.
Please try 1.4_rc4 as LiveWire and pfiefer reassured me that this bug is primarily due to the gcc 3.1 optimization patch I wrote. rc4 has this removed.
is this fixed ?
I'd like to know if this is still an issue
believe so, but nobody with a matching box has reported that it now works.
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux". I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers, this is the only reasonable way to do this.
