The SDL project released sdl12-compat 1.2.52, a compatibility layer for SDL 1.2 applications to run on top of SDL2. This allows SDL 1.2 applications to run on backends only available in SDL2 (like wayland and pipewire) and input improvements of SDL 2. Fedora also seems to plan to go this way: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/SDL12onSDL2 Ideally it would be possible to either install the current SDL 1.2 or sdl-compat with SDL2 for applications that require SDL 1.2. 1.2.60 has now been added as media-libs/libsdl.
Ebuild and commit explanation look great, thanks a lot!
