I noticed that uninstalling =x11-plugins/hexchat-javascript-0.3.2 seems to have fixed it for now.

That seems to be the key between crashing and not crashing.

Note that x11-plugins/hexchat-javascript is no longer in tree.

With x11-plugins/hexchat-javascript no longer being in the tree and upstream [0] no longer actively developing the package, it makes no sense to debug this in Gentoo, if it is reproducible at all with recent versions. Thus, closing the bug now.
