Description Chris Rebert 2005-01-08 17:55:57 UTC
When someone emerges gnome or gnome-light, a message should be displayed informing the user of the various configuration guides available from the Gentoo Doc Project and their URLs. I think the following docs should be referenced:

The GNOME Configuration HOWTO (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gnome-config.xml)
Gentoo Desktop Documentation Resources (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/index.xml?catid=desktop)

Please note the X config guide is not included as a separate bug has been filed for it.
These additions would help new users figure out how to setup GNOME and it's related packages on their own. This would reduce the number of repetitive questions about configuring GNOME asked on the forums and irc.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

2.
3.

This is a fine idea, but I think few things need to change.

The gnome configuration howto needs to be updated, maybe take some of the info from http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/gnome/index.xml (fam/gamin section would be good for users). I'll talk to other gnome people/doc team about getting that updated.

A link to desktop resources doesn't seem needed for the gnome build, since none of the other docs are really gnome related.

Yeh, this is a good idea, however the Config HOWTO isn't really all that useful - aside from exec gnome-session && startx. Our documentation definitely needs an update, but as usual, we don't have any free time.

Don't suppose you're volunteering Chris?

Sorry, I really just don't have the time, not that I wouldn't if I could.
Just FYI, last time I checked gamin was masked and portage kept wanting to remerge famd. Also, mDNSResponder isn't explained very much and in most cases is unnecessary.
Comment 4 Chris Rebert 2005-06-21 01:47:11 UTC
If gamin is stable enough, why isn't it unmasked?
Is it because it would involve some virtual pkg difficulties since fam and gamin
provide the same thing?

The inotify kernel bits have gone trough some changes and up to this point
haven't reached a steady state. gamin/inotify usage is promoted over fam because
of some fam/dnotify locking problems we try to get solve here, systemwide
polling is imho no serious option.

We still suggest gamin over fam for _gnome_, but it's still not our default
(stable) choice gentoo wide.

Why don't we mark this LATER until someone improves the guide?
