Compiles just fine with GCC 9.3.0. Bugs are mostly lack of compatibility with non-Linux platforms and hanging with bad OpenGL implementations.
I have to agree that this is still working and does not warrant a lastrites just yet. Bugs reported to it appears to be non-Linux and may be out of reach of developers. Also I'd claim an X client that triggers the X server to crash is an X server bug (bug 13). However if the requirement for all Gentoo packages to be able to be compiled with either LLVM or GCC, then this may be the sole reason to drop this package, which also seems kind of dubious. Thus I'd vote to keep it in, perhaps mark it as unstable (due to inability to build with clang/llvm issue) until it specifically stops building or there are actual security bugs in the code.
Another vote to keep this one around. I just built it fine - it's one of my favorite packages.
+1 to keep this ebuild in portage even if unstable or masked because it works fine on x86 and amd64 platform. Without this ebuild, Gentoo desktop got only windows 3.1 screesavers style.

I've posted a patch on #752755 to fix compilation with clang - like others here asked, please keep the eye candy ;-)
Still works and still glorious eye candy. :)
The package needs a new maintainer, because desktop-misc is going to be dissolved. I saw the open bugs, while cleaning up with old desktop-misc bugs. I am absolutely fine with keeping the package, if it has users and we can fix it. Thank you for reporting here.
The package is still masked and has reached the deadline. Ago hasn't reported back or merged the patch patch on #752755. If nobody else wants to maintain the package I can take it. Give me a few days, I haven't started working on it. But don't remove it yet!
Created a PR: https://github.com/gentoo/gentoo/pull/19511 If you accept it, what's the best way forward? Since upstream looks inactive for a long time, I could pile up patches to address further issues or create a repo that could be used as new upstream. Is there a preferred solution for ebuilds?
