When compiling gnucash-3.5, the build fails as check_symbol_exists has not been imported in gnucash/register/register-gnome/CMakeLists.txt This can be fixed by preceding the statement include(CheckSymbolExists) I have not tested with other versions, but the line is also missing from 3.6 upstream. I confirm that this is required for 3.6 as well, and that it fixes the build.
I just ran into this exact problem with GnuCash 3.5. The proposed patch made it compile again. Please add it to the tree!
I also ran into this problem right now, building app-office/gnucash-3.5. Same failure. Using dev-util/cmake-3.16.5. Curiously, I had successfully built app-office/gnucash-3.5 back on 2020-02-12. I had dev-util/cmake-3.14.6 at the time. I have not tested the proposed patch.
