Description Dead Schorsch 2004-11-04 01:59:56 UTC
I have a WLAN NIC and an ETH NIC on my laptop, which are used mutualy exclusive depending on my location. From the comment in /etc/conf.d/rc

# RC_NET_STRICT_CHECKING allows some flexability with the 'net' service.
# The following values are allowed:
# no - This basically means that at least one net.* service besides net.lo
# must be up. This can be used by notebook users that have a wifi and
# a static nic, and only wants one up at any given time to have the
# 'net' service seen as up.

I assumed, that this setting was perfect for my situation. But still, even if net.eth0 was started okay, every net-depending service (like tomcat) still tries to bring up net.wlan0 as well.

I see, that there is even a default setup for RC_NET_STRICT_CHECKING in /sbin/functions.sh ("no"), but the variable itself is never used in functions any more. Is it not yet supported?

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start
2. /etc/init.d/tomcat start
3.

Actual Results:
Starting net.wlan (failed)
Starting tomcat
 * ERROR: Problem starting needed services.
 *         "tomcat5" was not started.

Expected Results:
Properly check that one network-interface besides lookback is up and be quiet!

Comment 3 Dead Schorsch 2004-11-10 00:50:30 UTC
Just like to know: Is there a way of managing the order in which the network interfaces are started? It's because at my laptop wlan0 is started first and it takes a lot more time for WLAN to find out that there is not net, but for eth0 to figure out that there is no cable.
