I switched to ac-sources & decided to use udev. Although the nvidia ebuild mentioned the following : * This module will now work correctly under udev, you do not need to * manually create the devices anymore. The required devices (nvidia0-7, nvidiactl) were not present in /dev because of which X kept saying it couldn't initialize the Nvidia module & no screens found. I had to run NVmakedevices.sh after which things were fine. # emerge info Portage 2.0.51-r2 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.4.2, glibc-2.3.4.20041021-r0, 2.6.9-ac6 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.9-ac6 i686 Pentium III (Katmai) Gentoo Base System version 1.6.5 ccache version 2.3 [enabled] Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r5 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.5-r1 Binutils: sys-devel/binutils-2.15.92.0.2-r1 Headers: sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.4.22,sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.4.19-r1 Libtools: sys-devel/libtool-1.5.2-r5 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O3 -march=pentium3 -mmmx -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.1/share/config /usr/kde/3.2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /var/bind /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O3 -march=pentium3 -mmmx -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache distlocks sandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.mirrors.pair.com http://gentoo.osuosl.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X aalib acpi alsa apache2 apm arts avi berkdb bitmap-fonts cdr crypt cscope cups encode esd ethereal f77 fbcon foomaticdb gd gdbm gif gimpprint gnome gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 gtkhtml imlib imlib2 innodb javascript jpeg kde libg++ libwww mad mbox md5sum mikmod mmx motif mozilla mpeg mpeg4 mysql ncurses nls odbc offensive oggvorbis opengl oss pam pdflib perl png python qt quicktime readline sdl slang spell sse ssl svga tcltk tcpd tiff truetype usb vanilla x86 xml2 xmms xosd xv xvid zlib linguas_en" Anything else I need to provide? I tried re-emerging nvidia-kernel, but no entries got added.
this also afflicts AMD64, and i would suspect ALL, but i don't think i have the authority to move hardware from one to all.
Pushing to all.
Can you please confirm this is fixed with -r3 (or that its still broken). Works here though.
Still broken for me with r3.
OK back to basics.. Please check 1) you have nvidia-glx installed (if you are using glx) 2) you are loading the nvidia kernel module before starting X. This works for me on both 6111-r3 and 6629.
Closing due to inactivity / lack of information, reopen if its still a problem.
works fine with udev, now...closing.
