Using alsa-utils-1.1.6 aplay will not play a wav file pipe through stdin to aplay only static is produced. Using alsa_utils-1.1.2 this works . To produce the problem create a wav file then "cat file.wav | aplay " this in 1.1.6 only plays static . This works if you emerge alsa_utils-1.1.2 . Something has broken in alsa_utils-1.1.6 in aplay . aplay 1.1.6 will play the same file if you do this "aplay file.wav" But will not work if you "cat file.wav| aplay " . If aplay 1.1.2 both ways will play the .wav file .
