Description David McNab 2002-08-19 01:22:42 UTC
I use a 128k connection, which performs well.

but when using xemacs' 'package download' facility, it takes up to 10 minutes to
get the package directory from the ftp servers - even ibiblio.org

This doesn't seem normal - please advise if it's just a setting on my end.
I'm not using a proxy, and normally don't suffer from slow ftp performance.

ibiblio takes a few seconds here. you might be better off finding a mirror
closer to you. i am reasonably sure this is not really a gentoo linux related bug

I've tried 10 different mirrors, in Australia, USA, Canada and UK. Same problem,
emacs is all but hung when fetching packages. At the rate it's going, it'll take
DAYS to fetch/install dired and its dependencies.

Again I say - my internet connection is fine - I DON'T get any problems like
this with any other software on gentoo - just xemacs.

Since we've established that its not your internet connection, and its not you
gentoo install...perahaps its an XEmacs problem. You might be better of
researching the problem on XEmacs' mailing lists, bug database and newsgroups.

I can't reproduce this problem on either SuSE 8.0, Redhat 7.1 or Gentoo in two
different locations (albiet both in the US).
