I can only speak for US English spell check, but it is broken on www-client/firefox-61.0. Every word I type in web forms is underlined. Verified settings in preferences, and right clicked->Languages->Engiish(United States) is selected. This is known breakage and not likely to be fixed in gentoo. I have already included 62.0_beta* ebuild in the mozilla overlay which works as you are expecting it to.

The actual issue is that support for building against the system hunspell library was removed in Firefox 61. See upstream bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1460600 for more information. Gentoo unconditionally builds firefox against the system hunspell library, hence the breakage.

Perhaps I could have been more clear, but I *do* know what I am talking about. All that happened in Firefox 62 was that the --enable-system-hunspell flag was removed. However, --enable-system-hunspell became broken in Firefox 61, and the issue I linked to notes that --enable-system-hunspell was removed in Firefox 62 *because it was no longer supported* in Firefox 61. I'm not sure how constructive this conversation is, seems their are 3 ways to fix this 1. file a patch against 61 2. wait until 62 according to the bug upstream this isn't a hunspell issue are far as I can see, firefox is adding file:// so IO requests do the disk, so naturally they all fail. I fixed this with (as commented uptream) i did an `ln -s / file:` in my home directory.
