I ran into this as well. The games group was removed from baselayout back in 2005 and there is no package acct-group/games, so a games group will never be created. This is the source of the error. I have a patch and an updated ebuild that fixes the issue.

I tried to be clever and just patch Makefile.in instead but then found that 1.8.3 doesn't include it. D'oh!
