Is your perl properly installed? Try re-installing perl, automake and then avahi.

I can confirm this using =dev-lang/perl-5.26.1,
which appears to break =sys-devel/automake-1.11.6-r1 at runtime,
but sadly those packages don't block each other.

Upgrading to =sys-devel/automake-1.11.6-r2 which contains a fix for that issue resolves the problem for me.

Yes, Upgrading to =sys-devel/automake-1.11.6-r2 also fixes the problem for me too.

the latest version of avahi in the tree depends on automake-1.16
