I have postgresql-7.2.1-r2 emerged on my system.

I have the exact same symptoms on a machine I'm setting up for my father.  I
tried several times.  I uninstalled and reinstalled postgresql thinking there
had been a problem the first time but still no go.  I finally just switched back
to 1.6.6.

This problem seems to be related to the problem described on bug #6193. It's a
nasty problem caused by a certain CFLAG and it is fixed now. Could you try to
install this package one more time and report the results back to us?
