Using a kernel of gentoo-sources 4.10.0 or 4.10.1 with .config autogenerated by "make oldconfig" from a .config of 4.9.x (accepting all defaults) I got frequent messeges in console, particurally while compiling: Message from syslogd@blade at Thu Mar 2 00:39:02 2017 ... blade kernel: [ 98.014503] mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 1: Machine Check: 0 Bank 128: 0000000088020803 Message from syslogd@blade at Thu Mar 2 00:39:02 2017 ... blade kernel: [ 98.014505] mce: [Hardware Error]: TSC 4d996aa231 Message from syslogd@blade at Thu Mar 2 00:39:02 2017 ... blade kernel: [ 98.014508] mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 3: Machine Check: 0 Bank 128: 0000000088020803 Message from syslogd@blade at Thu Mar 2 00:39:02 2017 ... blade kernel: [ 98.014509] mce: [Hardware Error]: TSC 4d996ad5d0 Message from syslogd@blade at Thu Mar 2 00:39:02 2017 ... blade kernel: [ 98.014511] mce: [Hardware Error]: PROCESSOR 0:806e9 TIME 1488411542 SOCKET 0 APIC 3 microcode 48 Message from syslogd@blade at Thu Mar 2 00:39:02 2017 ... blade kernel: [ 98.015353] mce: [Hardware Error]: TSC 4d9997dcd8 Message from syslogd@blade at Thu Mar 2 00:39:02 2017 ... blade kernel: [ 98.015352] mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 3: Machine Check: 0 Bank 128: 0000000088030802 Message from syslogd@blade at Thu Mar 2 00:39:02 2017 ... blade kernel: [ 98.015351] mce: [Hardware Error]: PROCESSOR 0:806e9 TIME 1488411542 SOCKET 0 APIC 2 microcode 48 Message from syslogd@blade at Thu Mar 2 00:39:02 2017 ... blade kernel: [ 98.014507] mce: [Hardware Error]: PROCESSOR 0:806e9 TIME 1488411542 SOCKET 0 APIC 2 microcode 48 Message from syslogd@blade at Thu Mar 2 00:39:02 2017 ... blade kernel: [ 98.015348] mce: [Hardware Error]: TSC 4d9997dcdc Message from syslogd@blade at Thu Mar 2 00:39:02 2017 ... blade kernel: [ 98.015346] mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 1: Machine Check: 0 Bank 128: 0000000088030802 Message from syslogd@blade at Thu Mar 2 00:39:02 2017 ... blade kernel: [ 98.015354] mce: [Hardware Error]: PROCESSOR 0:806e9 TIME 1488411542 SOCKET 0 APIC 3 microcode 48 with other kernl I've not problems. Several web pages where someone talks about this problem: http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/os-applications/f/4613/t/19997490 http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/324237/understanding-machine-check-exceptions-mce https://lists.gt.net/linux/kernel/2596660
An interesting analysis: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/53112
I've made several tests. I've found that unchecking the "Intel MCE features" in the kernel config: Processor type and feature [*] Machine Check / overheating reporting │ │ │ │ [ ] Intel MCE features │ │ │ │ [ ] AMD MCE features leaving "Machine Chek ..." CHECKED, it seems not to give false positive any more. Probably because it doesn't analyse the values, so it is a bad workaround. But that messages were very annoying. I cannot argue why with kernel 4.9.x with the "Intel MCE feature" checked it didn't give any error message.
Can you emerge mcelog and then run it after you get some of these messages. This is related to thermal sensors.
Ok, I recompile 4.10.5 with the option "Intel MCE" and than reboot and do the test you ask. I'll let you know asap.
Here the ouput of mcelog command after an error: Hardware event. This is not a software error. So it looks like valid error messages are corresponding to the thermal events.
I don't think so. If you were right: 1) The same thing would be happened also with kernel <4.10, instead it happens just with 4.10.x kernels. 2) This problem affects a lot of notebook suddenly after the 4.10 kernels It is likely a software problem (false positive). Of course, beeing a bug, the kernel thinks to be right.
Problem is still there in kernel 4.10.6 even though less frequent.
I also suffer the same with an Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming/065C71, BIOS 01.00.05 03/01/2017. With kernel 4.9 all is ok, but with 4.11.x I see this: [ 0.049025] mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 0: Machine Check: 0 Bank 6: ee0000000040110a [ 0.049129] mce: [Hardware Error]: TSC 0 ADDR fef1ffc0 MISC 7880010086 [ 0.049194] mce: [Hardware Error]: PROCESSOR 0:906e9 TIME 1495615917 SOCKET 0 APIC 0 microcode 42 [ 0.049260] mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 0: Machine Check: 0 Bank 7: ee0000000040110a [ 0.049322] mce: [Hardware Error]: TSC 0 ADDR fef1ce40 MISC 47880010086 [ 0.049385] mce: [Hardware Error]: PROCESSOR 0:906e9 TIME 1495615917 SOCKET 0 APIC 0 microcode 42 [ 0.049450] mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 0: Machine Check: 0 Bank 8: ee0000000040110a [ 0.049513] mce: [Hardware Error]: TSC 0 ADDR fef1ff40 MISC 7880010086 [ 0.049574] mce: [Hardware Error]: PROCESSOR 0:906e9 TIME 1495615917 SOCKET 0 APIC 0 microcode 42 [ 0.049640] mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 0: Machine Check: 0 Bank 9: ee0000000040110a [ 0.049703] mce: [Hardware Error]: TSC 0 ADDR fef1ff00 MISC 3880010086 [ 0.049765] mce: [Hardware Error]: PROCESSOR 0:906e9 TIME 1495615917 SOCKET 0 APIC 0 microcode 42 It looks the same as: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/53112 https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/324237/understanding-machine-check-exceptions-mce http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=141432.0 https://lists.gt.net/linux/kernel/2596660

(In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #17) > And another reference at Dell side: > http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/3525/t/20012273 But even enabling that both options I get the same messages
(In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #17) > And another reference at Dell side: > http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/3525/t/20012273 I've compiled Kernel putting on yes: CONFIG_INTEL_PMC_CORE CONFIG_INTEL_PCH_THERMAL then I activate: Processor type and features [*] Machine Check / overheating reporting │ │ │ │ [*] Support for deprecated /dev/mcelog character device │ │ │ │ [*] Intel MCE features │ │ │ │ [ ] AMD MCE features │ │ │ │ < > Machine check injector support │ And I didn't get that annoying messages any more For me who opened this bug, I can considered it closed. Please tell me if this solution is good for everyone. Let me know. Silvio
It doesn't change anything on my case (kernel 4.12.10)
(In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #20) > It doesn't change anything on my case (kernel 4.12.10) I had kernel 4.12.9. I put my .config in the next message
Created attachment 491130 [details] .config kernel 4.2.19 (gentoo.sources) whith this settings I do not get any error messages anymore
could you do a diff of your old 4.12.9 config file and the 4.12.9 new config file ?
