Someone thought that it would be a good idea to put it in `dev-libs` category. This is obviously wrong. Should be in `wayland-wm`. Reproducible: Always Pls fix.

This was discussed at length before my sway ebuild was added to gentoo. A new category will apparently not be made just for one package. Once gentoo has many different wayland window managers / compositors, they will all be collectively moved to a new category. That said, I am also personally in support of creating a new category, but many developers said otherwise.

From what I understand, there are already other wayland wms/compositors in Gentoo beside sway – argument that there's no other ebuilds fitting in the category is invalid.
Frankly I find the tone of this bug's initial title as objectionable. "sway is in wrong category" You state this as if a statement of established fact and as if you are a final authority. The selection of the category of a new package is quite an arbitrary choice and like most decisions, it was made in balancing various influential factors. This was one of the first elements which I brought up on the prompting of the package. Amongst other choices, the addition was made bearing in mind that a category and the location of a package in portage CAN be shifted by pkgmove. I strongly suggest you refrain from taking such a dogmatic "know it all" approach and attitude is this or any future related topics. Decisions of this type are not helped by suggestions that in the opening line dictate a state of correctness or a final outcome. Otherwise there is fundamentally no allowance for further discussion or opinion. Worse, you set yourself up for your stance being either wrong in fundamental assertion, or rejected out of indignation and defiance.

Even I as a stander-by feels he does not deserve such criticism. I strongly agree with his statement. `wayland-wm` aligns with `x11-wm`, and sure we can wait till there are more wayland wm's to bother creating a new category, but before that, this should be a valid bug report. Taken a step back, even if he stated wrong, why scold someone that has taken the time to create this report? I believe there are many invalid reports, but they all bear the expectations and hope from the reporters to make Gentoo a better project. Everyone states false facts, sometimes. I don't see any indignance or defiance in the initial report. I don't think he cares that much about this issue either. It has very little impact on the functionality of this software. Your statement, however, does no help in resolving this issue, as far as I see (Nor does mine).
even without wayland-wm, dev-libs is ridiculous. sway is neither "dev" nor "lib". x11-wm would even be better, then it is more than half correct, since sway is a wm, and it does handle x11 programs (if xwayland is enabled).
The Sway project is splitting into various subproject: in addition to wlroots, now there are also swaylock and swayidle as standalone projects. I think it's time to get a final decision about the category of these packages. If gentoo devs do not want to open wayland-specific categories, since I find `x11-wm` still inappropriate (Sway is not X11), I propose the following: dev-libs/wlroots app-misc/sway app-misc/swaylock app-misc/swayidle In case the devs continue to consider the `x11-wm` category more appropriate than `app-misc`, however it remains to decide if swaylock and swayindle should go in `x11-misc` or `app-misc`. I'm writing the ebuilds for these packages and I need to know the appropriate category before submitting the PR. And if `dev-libs/sway` has to be moved in another category, I think we need a gentoo dev who takes care that Sway's users are informed of the change.
Sway moved to gui-wm/sway. This bug can be closed now.
