that is super weird. can you go into the build dir and run the makeinfo command by hand and see if it fails ? if so, run it through strace and attach that log here for us to review.

cd /var/tmp/portage/sys-libs/glibc-2.23-r2/work/glibc-2.23/manual
strace -f -o log \
  makeinfo -P /var/tmp/portage/sys-libs/glibc-2.23-r2/work/build-x86-i686-pc-linux-gnu-nptl/manual/ --output=/var/tmp/portage/sys-libs/glibc-2.23-r2/work/build-x86-i686-pc-linux-gnu-nptl/manual/libc.info libc.texinfo
Comment 5 Emmanuel Rosa 2016-05-12 18:15:46 UTC
It gets weirder. Since my /var/tmp/portage was empty (it's om tmpfs) I did the emerge again, and then proceeded with the steps after the error occurred. Strangely, the manual directory doesn't contain the file libc.texinfo.

(In reply to manny15 from comment #5)

that's how it should be. check out the steps i posted -- you need to cd to the source tree and run makeinfo from there, but pass flags to tell it to search the build output tree too.

libc.texinfo

It seems there are some Perl libraries missing.

A test textinfo file based on glibc.texinfo

The problem is occuring on line 6: @c '@codequotebacktick on' and '@codequoteundirected on' require

For example, if I run: makeinfo test.texinfo

I get the following errors:

test.texinfo:6: warning: @codequotebacktick should only appear at a line beginning
test.texinfo:6: warning: @codequoteundirected should only appear at a line beginning
test.texinfo:6: warning: @codequoteundirected should not appear in @codequotebacktick
test.texinfo:6: expected @codequoteundirected on or off, not `on' require'
test.texinfo:6: superfluous argument to @codequotebacktick
test.texinfo:6: expected @codequotebacktick on or off, not `on' and ''

But, when I remove the comment: @c '@codequotebacktick on' and '@codequoteundirected on' require

It works just fine. It looks like makeinfo is not interpreting the content following the "@c" as a comment. This is the changeset which added the comments (shown in a GitHub mirror): https://github.com/bminor/glibc/commit/97ee300903cdc0a0052d09ed7c3f7779a303d625

I'm using texinfo-6.1.

This problem showed up again on another Gentoo system. sys-libs/glibc-2.22-r4 is installed, but when attempting to upgrade to sys-libs/glibc-2.23-r3 I get:

Patch for manual/libc.texinfo

Adds a newline after @documentencoding UTF-8 in manual/libc.texinfo so that makeinfo can compile without errors.
Comment 12 Carsten Klaucke 2017-01-25 16:51:38 UTC
I have the same problem and it is not the first time that makeinfo ran into problems. I had a similar issue with screen (see bug 559746). In both cases makeinfo fails after setting the document encoding (@documentencoding <encoding>).
It seems that makeinfo is swallowing characters in the succeeding lines on particular machines/configurations. Maybe a perl expert should have a look into that issue.

I created a patch (attachment 461412 [details, diff] which adds an extra newline after @documentencoding) which allows for compiling the info files without failures.

Yes.
$ makeinfo test.texinfo
test.texinfo:6: warning: @codequotebacktick should only appear at a line beginning
test.texinfo:6: warning: @codequoteundirected should only appear at a line beginning
test.texinfo:6: warning: @codequoteundirected should not appear in @codequotebacktick
test.texinfo:6: expected @codequoteundirected on or off, not `on' require'
test.texinfo:6: superfluous argument to @codequotebacktick
test.texinfo:6: expected @codequotebacktick on or off, not `on' and ''

$ makeinfo --version
texi2any (GNU texinfo) 6.1

Adding a newline after '@documentencoding UTF-8' helps again and libc.info is created:
$ makeinfo test.texinfo
test.texinfo: warning: document without nodes

then attach that log file ?

what does this show:
$ qcheck \
  dev-lang/perl dev-libs/cryptlib dev-perl/libintl-perl \
  dev-perl/Log-Agent dev-perl/Text-Unidecode \
  dev-perl/Unicode-EastAsianWidth sys-apps/texinfo

your log shows that you have slightly different modules than you should have. for example, perl-5.22.3_rc4 uses:
  Encode.pm,v 2.72 2015/03/14
yet you have:
  Encode.pm,v 2.73 2015/04/15

it might not be significant, but your perl modules shouldn't randomly be different from what everyone else is using.

It seems /usr/bin/encguess was overwritten by perl-core/Encode

     Available versions:  2.730.0
     Installed versions:  2.730.0(09:39:26 PM 01/12/2017)

I removed perl-core/Encode and re-emerged perl, so that dev-lang/perl's encguess is installed but it didn't help. makeinfo test.texinfo is still failing.

By the way, perl-core/Encode is pulled in by dev-perl/Date-Manip.

what is installing Encode.pm ?

That's provided by perl-core/Encode , as indicated by the /vendor_perl/ part of the path.

Encode.pm that ships with perl turns up in a path without "vendor_perl" in it.

That .pm file is forced installation by virtual/perl-Encode-2.730.0, which was stabilized due to www-apps/rt needing it. ( 2.730 doesn't turn up in perl till v5.23 )

In short, anything that depends on virtual/perl-Encode should expect that version of Encode.pm ( and that file ) on stable.

I have three Gentoo installs having this exact same problem. I've tried some of the fixes mentioned about but I am still not able to emerge glibc-2.23-r2. Same exact bug mentioned.

What is the fix?
Comment 25 jerry.mcbride 2017-03-22 22:22:36 UTC
Same error for glibc-2.24-r1.

It'd be nice to see a fix for this.
Comment 26 jerry.mcbride 2017-03-22 23:23:17 UTC
not a real fix, but emerging texinfo-4.13-r2 allows glibc-2.23-r3 to emerge with no errors.

Also, gibc-2.24-r1 goes in with no errors also.

New texinfo is borked!!
Comment 27 Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2019-10-04 17:09:54 UTC
Is this still happening for current texinfo?
Comment 28 Carsten Klaucke 2019-10-13 21:24:36 UTC
Since a "doc" USE flag was introduced in the ebuild for glibc starting with ~2.26-r7, the error doesn't occur when "doc" is not set (which is the case on my machine).
But I tried emerging glibc w/ "doc" and the error is still there using sys-apps/texinfo-6.6-r1. (see new ebuild log)
