If you want to build with 2.1.2, generate your own digest.
Did you read the freetype website exaclty and carefully? If you think so, just take a look at this quotation: --> This releases contains a few important bug-fixes that make it the first release in the 2.1.x development branch that can safely replace a stable installation of FreeType on any system. The cache sub-system has also been optimized to drastically improve its performance. As usual, more details on this page for all details.. <-- Just watch the part

As usual, more details on this page for all details.. <-- Just watch the part «safely replace» I emerged it an have no problem at all, all fonts are rendered perfectly. Perhaps we should really unmask it as in the irc i just heard people saying «yes, it works great for me». see you, - Manny -
Please also watch the part <<development branch>> Meaning, it is not the stable branch, meaning we have already enouth issues with XFree86 in general/Xft/etc. This is what portage is all about .. you can use what you like. The fact of the matter is just you cannot expect us to throw away the last bit of stability and our sanity because you want to be *that* cutting edge. All the tools is there for you to experiment, and do things slightly differently if you so wish. BTW: I think what you want, is to set in /etc/make.conf: FEATURES="digest"
Will update freetype later on, but only if it proves not to break stuff.
