Description Michael Mair-Keimberger (iamnr3) 2015-11-01 20:21:04 UTC
Hi,

Since the last update of konsole last week, anything i do on konsole is very slow and laggy.
* Everytime i switch between two konsole windows i have to wait a moment (like a second) until the window gets the focus
* every commend i enter lag's - i always have to wait until the command gets executed (every command, even simple commands like ls, dmesg an so on...)
* scrolling is painful (genlop -l) takes ages to the bottom.

The problem is however only on konsole, anything else works as expected. The problem came with kde-apps/konsole-15.08.2 or generally with kde frameworks 15.08.2. kde-apps/konsole-15.08.0 worked perfectly well. Also xterm works perfectly well.

I though to wait a week and see if the problem goes away with further updates, however it gets really annoying now and i don't know what causes those lags.

I've tested following:
* downgrade to kde-apps/konsole-15.08.0 (restored the ebuild)
* switched the X use flag on konsole
* tried it with a complete new user profile

Nothing worked so far.
It seems like konsole uses a "software" mode for rendering everything...

You're not the first one to report this, and I do wonder why... it's a shot in the dark, but as I can't find existing reports about this, please try to rebuild kde frameworks:

# emerge -vp $(qlist -CI kde-frameworks/*)

In case you don't know `qlist`, it is part of portage-utils.

I think i found the correct bug at bugs.kde.org [1]. I did rebuild both kde-frameworks/* and kde-plasma/* , however no change so far. I've also switch from GLX to EGL in the Compositor Settings - no change :(
From the kde bug report it seems the problem belongs to qt-5.5.1. I wanted to downgrade qt but kde-frameworks/frameworkintegration-5.15 (and obviously the whole framework) depends on >=qt-5.5.1. :/

This is a workaround to make sure it gets rebuilt due to a private ABI break in Qt - 5.15.0 depends on <5.5 and 5.15.0-r1 depends on >=5.5 (you can mask -r1)

Thanks, haven't looked at 5.15.0 (without -r1) :)

The problem clearly belongs to QT. After downgrading QT (and rebuilding all kde-* packages) konsole is fast and smooth again :)

I've added the upstream bug to the URL. For me the problem is solved, but i guess we should keep the bug open since the latest QT is still affected and it would be clearly a stable blocker.
Comment 5 Michael Palimaka (kensington) gentoo-dev 2015-11-14 14:44:16 UTC
Do you happen to have media-libs/freetype[infinality] as someone suggested on the bug?
Comment 6 Roman Grebennikov 2015-11-16 09:37:08 UTC
I've submitted an upstream bug to Qt as it definitely looks like that Qt 5.5 freetype font rendering update is the source of the issue: https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-49452

Yes! I have infinality-ulitmate-meta installed and thus also media-libs/freetype[infinality]. However, there is no need to uninstall infinality in order to get get rid of that bug.
I've simply:

eselect infinality set 3 (linux)
and
eselect lcdfilter set 10 (linux)

in order to fix the problem temporally. I hope qt can fix this upstream.
Comment 8 Johannes Huber (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-10-18 19:52:46 UTC
Qt 5.6.2 is in tree. Closing then.
