neither cups cup-filters or samba[cups] creates a smb backend which makes it impossible to connect cups to a remote smb printer. I cannot find any deprecation notices, only some documentation that says ipp is less prone to errors.

I have worked around with

ln -s $(which smbspool) /usr/libexec/cups/backend/smb

which fixes the problem.

I am not sure which package should supply this link but on my system nothing does.
