While emerging octave it stops on the 'configure' phase with the error:

and readline 4.2 doesn't make part of the 'standard' gentoo ebuilds

octave is now set up in profiles for gcc-2.95.x and gcc-3.x systems.

gcc-2.95.x = octave-2.0.x
gcc-3.x = octave-2.1.x
