It would be nice, if the existing compiz packages would be bumped to the new 0.9 series including emerald and depedencies. Reproducible: Always
0.9.12.2 is out. https://launchpad.net/compiz/0.9.12/0.9.12.2/+download/compiz-0.9.12.2.tar.bz2
*** Bug 584936 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Pasting comment from bug 584936: Compiz/emerald have new upstream and they seem to be pretty responsive (my experience from Fedora and upstream bug reporting). Their new releases fixed many bugs including crashes and rendering artefacts and even added new features, so please update the ebuilds in Gentoo. In case you are short of time I could provide updated e-builds, because I am going to update the packages at least through my local override. We already have the updated packages in Fedora. New upstream links: https://github.com/raveit65/compiz https://github.com/raveit65/emerald Latest versions (2016-06-03) compiz-0.8.12.3 emerald-0.8.12.4 Versions in Gentoo: x11-wm/compiz-0.8.8-r3 x11-wm/emerald-0.8.8
From the readme: Futher development of Compiz 0.8.x series (compiz-reloaded).
Sorry for confusion. Fedora switched to the 0.8.x fork, but the original upstream 0.9.x seems also live. Maybe the teams will merge their effort.
What is finally the way/fork to go? It seems our current ebuilds are based on a completely obsolete compiz version :/
(In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #6) > What is finally the way/fork to go? It seems our current ebuilds are based > on a completely obsolete compiz version :/ I don't know, it's probably topic for wider discussion, but I know the following: - the 0.8 is C code - the 0.9 is new rewrite in C++ code - the fork is an attempt to continue the time proven 0.8 branch - both the fork and the 0.9 seems to fix the most annoying Compiz bugs - according to the discussion with some authors of the fork they are not against merge of their code into the upstream 0.8 branch, I think it just needs more communication / coordination - we need at least to backport patches for the most annoying issues downstream (e.g. ALT + TAB crash, Intel SNA rendering artifacts workaround, few other crash fixes, etc.)
Up ? I tried on MATE but there are some bugs with x11-wm/compiz-fusion (0.8.8-r1)
There is already 0.8.14 out and it would be great to have at least Compiz-Reloaded in Gentoo since its the same version as the one we already have in. The Gentoo one is slowly dying and Compiz-Reloaded is definitely not dead as it has new commits even after that latest version (which is from April). There is an overlay for that matter but its slightly outdated as well: https://github.com/kajzersoze/compiz-reloaded-overlay
Why masked for removal? It compiles OK and works OK, I am using it daily on both Gentoo (compiz-0.8.8-r3) and Fedora (compiz-0.8.14-1). If the problem is no maintainer I could step-in, but I am not Fedora devel yet, only Fedora / RHEL devel :)

Our versions are completely obsolete and buggy: https://bugs.gentoo.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=compiz&list_id=3785184 This needs to do a major version bump of compiz, emerald and all the components
Of course you can try to go ahead and maintain them: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Proxy_Maintainers and finally bump this and handle their bugs :/
(In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #13) > Of course you can try to go ahead and maintain them: > https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Proxy_Maintainers > Thanks for info, it seems good. > and finally bump this and handle their bugs :/ I will try to prepare PRs bumping to the fork we have in Fedora. It proves to be quite stable. I will look at it in January (I cannot give it the time now).
I've linked some overlay in here back then. Sadly this overlay is no longer maintained. But there is a new one where i've installed Compiz 0.8.14 from. I haven't encountered any problems so far. Maybe it might help as a reference for some updates: https://github.com/ethus3h/compiz-reloaded-overlay It would be a sad thing to have Compiz removed from Gentoo as there are a number of people using it (me included) and there is a new version out there already.
same here, it may be outdated, but until we have a version bump in portage, I'd rather we keep this available. 0.8 compiles/works pretty stable in my setups. Seems like Elliot Chandler created version bump request at https://bugs.gentoo.org/635256 and the pull request: https://github.com/gentoo/gentoo/pull/6032 for Compiz 0.8.14. Can this be merged instead of deleting the ebuilds? Thanks! -N
