Any news?

paludis-build.log.xz

Trying to install this with paludis gets even worse. With the default sandbox install, the unprivileged 'paludisbuild' user will not have access to write to /var/log/sandbox. Hence a sandbox log, like the one you attached, will not be available. See bug 537124 on how to resolve this.

sandbox-17621.log

Having fixed bug 537124 a sandbox log will be generated, see sandbox-17621.log.

But unlike portage, paludis will _not_ fail to emerge/cave scilab. This might be a wrong behavior of paludis and subject of another bug, since the PM cannot guarantee that the compile and install phases were successful IF sandbox violations occured. IMHO portage and paludis should both fail to merge an ebuild IF sandbox violations occured.

If we know that sandbox-denying access to /proc/mtrr will not fail the target 'doc' from being built successfully, i.e.
  '/var/tmp/paludis/sci-mathematics-scilab-5.5.1/work/scilab-5.5.1/.libs/scilab-cli-bin \
    -ns -noatomsautoload -f modules/functions/scripts/buildmacros/buildmacros.sce'

runs fine and produces expected results without having written to /proc/mtrr then it might be added to SANDBOX_PREDICT for a fix. sandbox.conf comments say:
  # SANDBOX_PREDICT - respective paths are not writable, but no access violation
  # will be issued in the case of a write

There have been other ebuilds facing the same problem, e.g. the imagemagick one. It's using 'addpredict' function in src_prepare() and installs a file to /etc/sandbox.d in src_install() to deal with the problem. See bug 472766 for further details on this.

Again, addpredict may only be introduced as a fix, if we can assert that the 'doc' target succeeds without having had actual write access to /proc/mtrr.

Comment 4 Guillaume Horel 2015-02-01 03:04:28 UTC
I can reproduce the error as well. I'm pretty sure /proc/mtrr is not needed since I've used that ebuild with no issue before, so that I've added addpredict /proc/mtrr to the ebuild and pushed it to the overlay.
