On OS X,

checking for sys/inotify.h... no
configure: error: File notification `inotify' requested but requirements not found.


echo 'app-editors/emacs -inotify' >> /path/to/your/prefix/etc/portage/package.use
as a workaround.

The inotify flag should be added to use.mask in both profiles/prefix/bsd/ and profiles/prefix/darwin/. (Please note that it is use.masked in profiles/default/bsd/ already.)
